CALLWOOD RUM DISTILLERY
Ever thought of where the name Cane Garden Bay on Tortola comes from? I’m sure you guessed it, it’s from the history of their sugarcane plantations and rum distillery, a fundamental part of the British Virgin Islands’ cultural heritage.
Cane Garden Bay is home of the Callwood Rum Distillery, where they make Arundel Cane Rum. This rum has been distilled and blended by the Callwood Family for more than 200 years in Caribbean’s oldest continuously operating pot distillery.

You can visit the distillery Monday till Friday on your visit to Cane Garden Bay, in this beautiful old historical building steps across the road from the beach. After the storms the distillery was severely damaged and needed a new roof, but they are all up and running again!

REEF-SAFE SUNSCREEN

What sailing trip to the BVI is complete without a heavy dose of sunshine? For many, the promise of sun-dulgence is one of the key reasons to visit the Caribbean. Just don’t forget to apply sunscreen! The only problem is that most sunscreens are very bad for the beautiful corals and while snorkeling over them, you might cause more damage than you realize.
We know that our reefs are suffering at the hands of global climate change due to rising ocean temperatures, as the stress of warm water causes corals to bleach.
In addition, scientists now say that chemically based sunscreen can induce the same bleaching response in coral. Studies have shown that oxybenzone and octinoxate are found in over 3,500 sunscreen products, including household names like Tropicana, Banana Boat, and Coppertone.
When corals absorb these chemicals, they have a similar reaction as they would if surrounding water temperatures were to get too warm.

What can you do to help?
While there is still a lot of work to be done in order to save fragile coral reefs, our individual choice to purchase reef-safe sunscreen can be of huge help! And the good news is, there are plenty reef-safe options on the market for consumers to choose from.

2018 CREWED BOAT SHOWS
Beginning of November the crewed yachts presented themselves to the yacht brokers in two 2018 crewed charter boat shows. The first boat show was held in Nanny Cay Marina, Tortola, BVI and the second show took place at Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas. Our broker, Els Kraakman, has visited around 100 crewed yachts and met with the crews for the upcoming charter season. These annual charter shows are important to update our knowledge of the crewed yachts, so we can recommend the best crewed yacht to our clients.
HOW THESE CREWED CHARTER BOAT SHOWS BENEFIT YOUEvery year we see new yachts and new crews entering the crewed yacht charter fleet and our crewed yacht specialist Els Kraakman visits them on the boat shows to see these yachts, what their specialty is and to meet the new crew. But also the more seasoned yachts will present their updates, upgrades, new water toys, new decorations, and new offers we need to know about. With all this knowledge we will try to select the best sailboat, sailing catamaran, or motor yacht that fits your needs and budget.
