Hurricane Irma Update 2 from BVI Yacht Charters
HURRICANE IRMA UPDATE 2
Dear,
On September 6 2017 the British Virgin Islands were hit by a category 5 Hurricane Irma. Almost 2 weeks later Hurricane Maria threatened our islands again, but fortunately did not cause any further damage for us. In the meantime we have been working hard to help rebuild the islands and we are starting to rebuild our business. Every day is a step forward to recovery and we are proud we have a working office again with a generator and (limited) WiFi, so we have been able to start communication again. Unfortunately our telephone lines are still down, so email is the only way to communicate for now ([email protected]).
Our staff has set up a temporary workshop and is working hard to repair yachts, order parts and get as many yachts as possible into great condition so that they can rejoin the fleet. We also have some new yachts coming, and we expect that more new yachts will join our fleet, to take advantage of a charter market that is now in very short supply. Many of the crewed yachts were down island or survived the hurricane, so all these charters remain scheduled as planned.
The main message we would like to send across is that we’re in good spirits and very positive about our future. We feel very fortunate to say that for us, the upcoming season will be ‘business as usual’ We have some charters occurring in November and we will be fully operational for the holiday season! While the BVI will look different and maybe a bit more ‘rustic’ for the next few months, it will have all the same features that caused you to fall in love with the islands the first time you visited!
Many restaurants and bars around the island have already reopened including, Captain Mulligans, The Beach Bar, Gennaker Café and Brandywine; showing the amazing progress that can be made in just a small amount of time!!! Famous bars like Foxys, Soggy Dollar, Willy T, Cooper Island Beach Club, Pirates, Quito’s, Elm’s and Myetts will follow soon. We have also learned the first cruise ships will begin returning to Tortola in November. Supermarkets are stocked and open, gas stations, banks and other shops are open as well.
The trees are getting green, the beaches are still white and the sea is gorgeous blue. Fortunately our underwater world was not damaged by the hurricane, so the snorkeling and diving will still be breathtaking! We still have our friendly, laid back atmosphere and many island beach bars are already setting up a cooler and umbrella ready to serve you a painkiller or two!
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Kind Regards
The BVI Yacht Charters Team

HOW CAN YOU HELP US?
First and foremost you can help us by returning to our beautiful BVI's on one of our bareboat or crewed charter yachts and help our islands and economy to recover.
(opens in a new tab)
Secondly we have set up a Go Fund Me page to help our staff get back on their feet. Many lost their homes and their belongings. So we are asking for your assistance. All donations, no matter how big or small, will go directly to our employees to help them put their lives back together. We thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
